The supermassive black hole in NGC4486a detected with SINFONI at the VLT†

چکیده
The near-infrared integral field spectrograph SINFONI at the ESO VLT opens a new window for the study of central supermassive black holes. With a near-IR spatial resolution similar to HST optical and the ability to penetrate dust it provides the possibility to explore the low-mass end of the M•-σ relation (σ < 120 km s−1) where so far very few black hole masses were measured with stellar dynamics. With SINFONI we observed the central region of the low-luminosity elliptical galaxy NGC 4486a at a spatial resolution of ≈ 0.1′′ in the K band. The stellar kinematics was measured with a maximum penalised likelihood method considering the region around the CO absorption band heads. We determined a black hole mass of M• = (1.25 −0.79)×10 M (90 % C.L.) using the Schwarzschild orbit superposition method including the full 2dimensional spatial information. This mass agrees with the predictions of the M•-σ relation, strengthening its validity at the lower σ end.

Optics Assisted 3 D spectroscopy observations for black hole mass measurements
The very high spatial resolution provided by Adaptive Optics assisted spectroscopic observations at 8m-class telescopes (e.g. with SINFONI at the VLT) will allow to greatly increase the number of direct black hole (BH) mass measurements which is currently very small. This is a fundamental step to investigate the tight link between galaxy evolution and BH growth, revealed by the existing scaling...

متن کاملUnderstanding the environment around the intermediate mass black hole candidate ESO 243-49 HLX-1
Aims. ESO 243-49 HLX-1, otherwise known as HLX-1, is an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) candidate located 8 (3.7 Kpc) from the centre of the edge-on S0 galaxy ESO 243-49. How the black hole came to be associated with this galaxy, and the nature of the environment in which it resides, are still unclear. Using multi-wavelength observations we investigate the nature of the medium surrounding H...
متن کاملThe Central Parsecs of Centaurus A: High Excitation Gas, a Molecular Disk, and the Mass of the Black Hole
We present two-dimensional gas-kinematic maps of the central region in Centaurus A. The adaptive optics (AO) assisted SINFONI data from the VLT have a resolution of 0. 12 in K-band. The ionized gas species (Brγ, [Fe ii], [Sivi]) show a rotational pattern that is increasingly overlaid by non-rotational motion for higher excitation lines in direction of Cen A’s radio jet. The emission lines of mo...
متن کاملThe supermassive black hole of FornaxA
The radio galaxy Fornax A (NGC 1316) is a prominent merger remnant in the outskirts of the Fornax cluster. Its giant radio lobes suggest the presence of a powerful AGN, and thus a central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Fornax A now seems to be in a transition state between active black hole growth and quiescence, as indicated by the strongly declined activity of the nucleus. Studying objects i...
